Message Title: How to Walk in the Anointing
Date Presented: May 13, 2007
Delivered By: Lynn Kidd

The title of my message is: How to Walk in the Anointing.

Today I want to share with you HOW WE CAN WALK IN THE ANOINTING.

INTRO: How many people still listen to the News or read the Newspaper. Anyone tired of it? Every time you pick up the paper or listen to the News there is always something awful going on. — sickness, disease, killings, devastations. Here are just a few…..

1. The ending of 32 innocent lives by some demon-possessed mad man with a gun

2. Destruction of and entire town of 1500 people by a 205 mph tornado in Greensburg, KS

3. The arrest of six Islamic terrorists in Fort Dix, NJ hellbent on killing Americans.

Isn’t it time the church took a stand against the devil and his work?

Life can get pretty depressing if you have no hope or a way out but Jesus proclaims good news and that same life that Jesus preaches is available to us today to walk in His power to destroy the works of the enemy.

Turn with me to: Isaiah 61:1-4 NIV a very familiar passage:

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion —
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

You Can Walk in the Anointing by:

I. DEFINE THE ANOINTING AND ITS PURPOSE:

This is what Nelsons Bible Dictionary has to say about the anointing: There are many scriptures I will just reference to and you can look them up later.

A. ANOINT or ANOINTING

To authorize, or set apart, a person for a particular work or service (Isa 61:1). The anointed person belonged to God in a special sense.

The phrases, “the Lord’s anointed,” “God’s anointed,” “My anointed,” “Your anointed,” or “His anointed” are used of Saul (1 Sam 26:9,11), David (2 Sam 22:51), and Solomon (2 Chron 6:42).

In the New Testament, all who are Christ’s disciples are said to be anointed; they are God’s very own, set apart and commissioned for service (2 Cor 1:21).

We know in the Old Testament Priests, kings, and prophets were anointed. Oil was poured on the head of the person being anointed (Ex 29:7). Kings were set apart through the ritual of anointing, which was performed by a prophet who acted in God’s power and authority (1 Sam 15:1). The Old Testament also records two instances of the anointing of a prophet (1 Kings 19:16; Isa 61:1).

In the passage in Isaiah 61, Jesus the Messiah is described as “anointed.”

In the New Testament we see that the anointing was frequently used in connection with healing. The disciples anointed the sick (Mark 6:13), and James instructed the elders of the church to anoint the sick with oil (James 5:14). This anointing was for the purpose of healing.

The anointing means, “to smear”. Not just a little dab will do you.

Anointing in the New Testament also refers to the anointing of the Holy Spirit, which brings understanding (1 John 2:20,27). This anointing is for kings, priests, and prophets; but the good news is the Bible says, God says that is what you are..

Luke 3:21-22

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

B. The anointing is the equipping by the Holy Spirit to get the job done.

Just as Jesus was anointed for the continued work His Father had for Him we, too, have that same anointing available to us.

Jesus started His earthly ministry only after he was baptized in the Holy Spirit.

C. The anointing is not simply for personal enjoyment. It is always a mark of a mission, a commission or a sending assignment.

It’s great soaking in the presence of the Lord but if thats all we do we are missing what God called us to.

ILL. It was my last year of Bible School God was doing a tremendous work in the student body and the Spirit of the Lord was ever so present and God was setting people free. Even in my own life God was touching areas of my life. I was being renewed and refreshed but it didn’t end there. I could have stayed in that place because it was nice and comfortable but NO- there was much more that God had for me.

During that time God began to break my heart for the nations in even a greater way then before. He spoke to me about my assignment- Kenya, East Africa. I am glad I didn’t just stay in the soaking place but moved out into what He prepared me for.

As we continue to read on in the 4th chapter of Luke it says in verse 1. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert. We read on and it talks about Jesus being tempted by the devil. Jesus went through trials and testing. He went in with the power of the Holy Spirit and came out with the same power. He never lost it!

Then it continues on in vs 16 of Luke

Luke 4:16-22

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,

to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

D. The anointing empowers us to destroy the works of the devil.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

In this passage it does not say maybe you will receive power – it says YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon you!!!! Then you will be commissioned

ILL. Just like you expect your vacuum to start working when you plug it in because you are connecting it to the power source the outlet which has current electricity going through it. The same way as we are connected to the Holy Spirit we are expecting and believing to get the power.

My kids have a children’s DVD, Little Einstein and in one part of the movie the kids are on a mission and they keep telling the kids say with us we need more power and they keep saying it. I thought about our own lives and how we need to be empowered to get the job done.

What will we be empowered to do? Isaiah 61:1-3/Luke 4

We need the anointing to speak forth the word of God with boldness and walk in the miraculous!

ILL. Growing up I was very quiet and shy. I know you can’t imagine that but it is true. When I was 15 our youth pastor at the time wanted the group to go and witness at concerts and pass out tracks. How many people remember doing that. Well I was nervous and to be honest a bit fearful but as I began to step out and believe God was going to use me it He did and it was an awesome time. I want to encourage you youth get out of your comfort zone and go out street witnessing with Michael and Lisa Johnson.

As you are available to God and yielded to Him you will see mighty things happen– People saved and delivered!

APP. I encourage you if you are not baptized in the Holy Spirit that you would receive it today. That’s why the anointing is essential for our Christian life!!!

Believe and receive it. God has good things for you.

You Can Walk in the Anointing by:

I. DEFINE THE ANOINTING AND ITS PURPOSE

II. KNOW WHO THE ANOINTING IS FOR:

Did you ever ask your self that question who is it really for? I know the kings and priest had the anointing but this is just little old me. What can I do? The anointing is for all believers!

Let me read you a story from Our Daily Bread, April 2ii

ILL. During a Billy Sunday evangelistic campaign, a mentally impaired boy came faithfully each night to sing in the choir. “Joey was not very bright,” said Homer Rodeheaver, the well-known song leader for Billy Sunday, “but he never missed any of our meetings and wouldn’t leave until he shook my hand. Sometimes I was embarrassed by the way he constantly tailed me, and I secretly wished he’d go away.”

Then one evening a man came to Rodeheaver and said, “Thank you for being kind to my son Joey. He’s not right mentally, but never has he enjoyed anything so much as singing in the choir. He worked hard doing simple chores for people so he could contribute to the collection. Through his pleadings my wife and five other children came to this evangelistic campaign and have now received Christ. Last night his 75-year-old grandfather, who has been an atheist all his life, was saved, and tonight his grandmother also came forward. Now our entire family is converted!’” Joey was one of God’s faithful servants.

A. The anointing is for ALL MEN (women, children)!

Phil 2:5-8

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!

John 5:19

Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

I would like to read something from When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson.

Pg 29

Jesus could not heal the sick. Neither could He deliver the tormented from demons or raise the dead. To believe otherwise is to ignore what He said about Himself, and more importantly, to miss the purpose of His self-imposed restriction to live as a man.

Jesus Christ said of Himself, ‘The Son can do nothing.: In the Greek language that word nothing has a unique meaning– It means NOTHING, just like it does in English! He had NO supernatural capabilities whatsoever! While He is 100 percent God, He chose to live with the same limitations that man would face once He was redeemed. He made that point over and over again. Jesus became the model for all who would embrace the invitation to invade the impossible in His name. He performed miracles, wonders, and signs, as a man in right relationship to God…not as God. If He performed miracles because He was God, then they would be unattainable for us. But if He did them as a man, I am responsible to pursue His lifestyle. Recapturing this simple truth changes everything…and makes possible a full restoration of the ministry of Jesus in His Church.

CHURCH WHATEVER WAS AVAILABLE TO HIM THEN IS AVAILABLE TO US NOW!!

So the anointing is available to us.

We are sinners cleansed by the blood of Jesus. Because of what Jesus did on the cross nothing separates us from the Father.

Quote from “The Anointing of His Holy Spirit” by Smith Wigglesworth:

If you will allow the Holy Ghost to have full control, you will find you are living in the Spirit. You will discover that your opportunities will be God’s opportunities. And you will find that you have come to the right place at the right time. Then the Holy Spirit will give you the exact words to speak, anointed words that will meet the need of the moment.

APP. I want to encourage you today that you would take hold of the word of God. That you would be God’s anointed ministers today set on fire for God. That our faith would be activated!!! Let’s believe that His great might and power will burn in us until our whole lives are energized by His power.

You Can Walk in the Anointing by:

I. DEFINE THE ANOINTING AND ITS PURPOSE

II. KNOW WHO THE ANOINTING IS FOR

The Spirit of God is in you and wants out of you so he can flow through you to change the world around you.

ILL. I wanted to share a story about Diane Frigon. She gave me permission. Diane was a little bit nervous about starting her own cell group but we just kept encouraging her that she would do great. It got her out of her comfort zone.. “I have to ask my neighbors”???? Now Diane has good relationships with her neighbors. How could anyone not like Auntie Diane! But Diane knew what it was all about. That Jesus might be revealed in her neighbors. So Diane started asking her neighbors. Some said I’ll think about it and others said thanks but no thanks I am not religious. (2 stories here)

One of her neighbors started coming to cell group. That was encouraging but soon it seemed like something always came up and they couldn’t make it. So discouragement came in but she began to give it over to God. It is by your Spirit that you draw men. Then they finally made a meeting and a question was asked about have you felt the Lord drawing you to himself. This person said well, “ over the past months I have had a neighbor sharing with me and inviting me to a cell group and I have sensed God drawing me to himself like never before”! What a testimony- It goes on-

Another neighbor dropped by Diane’s to give her food for the food bank. They started talking and Diane asked this person was doing. Well, not so good. They were having problems with their vision. This person already told Diane that they were not religious. The Holy Spirit prompted Diane to say, well, can I pray for you…. and they said yes! Now Diane could have said to God, well you know he is not religious and I just can’t do that. Instead Diane full of the Holy Ghost stepped out in faith and asked the question.

The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD.

Honorable Secretary of Agriculture, Washington, D.C.

Dear Sir,

My friend, Dan Hansen, over at Honey Creek, Iowa, received a check for $1,000.00 from the government for not raising hogs. So I want to go into the ‘NOT RAISING HOGS’ business next year.

What I want to know is, in your opinion, what is the best kind of farm not to raise hogs on? And what is the best breed of hogs not to raise? I want to be sure that I approach this endeavor in keeping with all government policies.

As I see it, the hardest part of the ‘NOT RAISING HOGS’ program is keeping an accurate inventory of how many hogs I haven’t raised.

My friend Hansen is very joyful about the future of the business. He has been raising hogs for twenty years or so, and the best he has ever made on them was $422.90 in 1968, until this year when he got your check for the $1000.00 for not raising 50 hogs.

If I get $1000.00 for not raising 50 hogs, then would I get $2000.00 for not raising 100 hogs? I plan to operate on a small scale at first, holding myself to about 4,000 hogs not raised the first year, which would bring in about $80,000.00; then I can afford an airplane.

Now another thing - these hogs I will not raise will not eat 100,000 bushels of corn. I understand that the government also pays people not to raise corn and wheat. Would I qualify for payments for not raising these crops not to feed my hogs I will not be raising’

I want to get started as soon as possible as this seems to be a good time of the year for the ‘NOT RAISING HOGS’ and ‘NOT PLANTING CROPS’ business.

Also I am giving serious consideration to the ‘NOT MILKING COWS’ business and any information you would have on the endeavor would be greatly appreciated.

In view of the fact that I will be totally unemployed, I will be filing for unemployment and food stamps, and was wondering how long that process takes.

Be assured, Mr. Secretary, you will have my vote in the upcoming election.

Patriotically yours, P.S. Would you please notify me when you plan to give out the free cheese again’

Don Genereaux

Now Don had a bit of a misunderstanding about the real-life application of governmental empowerment…and so did a large crowd of Jewish people in the Biblical story that we’ll open with…

John 12:12-16 12 On the next day the large crowd who had come to the feast, when they heard that Jesus was coming to Jerusalem, 13 took the branches of the palm trees and went out to meet Him, and began to shout, ” Hosanna! BLESSED IS HE WHO COMES IN THE NAME OF THE LORD, even the King of Israel.” 14 Jesus, finding a young donkey, sat on it; as it is written, 15 “FEAR NOT, DAUGHTER OF ZION; BEHOLD, YOUR KING IS COMING, SEATED ON A DONKEY’S COLT.”

NASU

A combination of centuries of frustration at the hands of Assyrian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek and Roman oppressors, AND the prophetic promises of God, AND the miraculous works of Jesus convinced this large crowd of Jews that Jesus of Nazareth was the King, their Messiah that would restore Israel to her former glory. Now, restoring royalty, a Kingdom was in the mind of God, but, God had a far greater purpose for King Jesus than simply empowering one group of people with similar DNA to rule over all the other governments of the world. To get a better understanding of just how beyond this concept of government, God’s plan was than this…we need to go back to the beginning…let’s turn to Genesis, Chapter 1…

I. God’s Plan for Man to Rule with Authority

Gen 1:26 Then God said, “Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them rule… NASU

Gen 1:27-28 27 God created man in His own image, in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them. 28 God blessed them; and God said to them, “Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth, and subdue it; and rule… NASU

So, God delegated to mankind an authority to rule over, to subdue the earth…to exercise a God-given, kingly authority over the works of His hands, in the likeness of the King who created them in His image.

Ps 8:5-6

5 Yet You have made him a little lower than God,

And You crown him with glory and majesty!

6 You make him to rule over the works of Your hands;

You have put all things under his feet, NASU

II. Satan’s Plan to Usurp God’s Plan

Then, sadly, Adam and Eve surrendered their God-given authority to Satan when they believed the lying words of Satan and ate the forbidden fruit. Satan described the transaction like this…

Luke 4:5-6 5 And he led Him (Jesus) up and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world in a moment of time. 6 And the devil said to Him, “I will give You all this domain and its glory; for it has been handed over to me NASU

Adam and Eve placed themselves, and all of mankind, under his dominion by believing Satan’s lies rather than trusting in God’s word!

Listen to Andrew Murray in his book, The Power of the Blood…

Man had been destined to be king of this world, for God said, ‘Have dominion” When Satan conquered the king he took his entire kingdom under his own authority ‘ and this authority was recognized by God. God, in His holy will, had ordained that if man listened to Satan, he must suffer the consequences and become subject to his tyranny. God never in this matter used His power or exercised force but always took the way of law and right, and so Satan retained his authority until it was taken from him in a lawful manner.

In fact, Scripture speaks of Satan as “the prince of the power of the air,” “god of this world,” (2 Cor 4:4) and the “ruler of this world.” But, even before that moment when Adam and Eve surrendered their inheritance from the Lord, in His foreknowledge of all that would happen, Father had a loving plan to restore kingly authority to man, in a lawful manner.

III. God’s Plan to Restore Man’s Ruling Authority

Illustr: On Restoration

A few years ago, an angry man rushed through the Rijks Museum in Amsterdam until he reached Rembrandt’s famous painting ‘Nightwatch.’ Then he took out a knife and slashed it repeatedly before he could be stopped.

A short time later, a distraught, hostile man slipped into St. Peter’s Cathedral in Rome with a hammer and began to smash Michelangelo’s beautiful sculpture The Pieta.

Two cherished works of art, created by some of the most skilled artists the world has ever known, were severely damaged. Well, what did the officials do? Throw these highly valuable, painstakingly designed, unique masterpieces out and forget about them? Absolutely not! Using the best experts of this era, they worked with the utmost care and precision, they made every effort to restore the treasured work of the hands of Rembrandt and Michelangelo. How much greater a work are each one of you, handcrafted by Him who actually formed Rembrandt and Michelangelo in their mother’s womb, as well as you.

So, our loving Father, faced with the marred work of His hands had a Master Plan to restore this kingly authority to His sons and daughters by judging the sin of the world, through Jesus Christ, His only begotten Son, the seed of Eve…listen to the curse spoken over Satan by the Lord, soon after Satan stripped the authority from mankind. It’s a curse that reveals God’s plan for the future restoration of man…

Gen 3:15

15 And I will put enmity (or hostility)

Between you and the woman,

And between your seed and her seed;

He shall bruise (crush) you on the head, (describes a death blow)

And you shall bruise him on the heel.” (describes a painful but not fatal blow) NASU

So, the Lord declared His Master Plan of restoration, to legally strip the authority from Satan and return it to man. The authority that Adam and Eve had yielded to Satan by believing and obeying him rather than believing and obeying the Lord. God’s plan involved delivering His Son Jesus Christ over to righteous wrath and judgment unto death, as a substitute, in the place of disobedient mankind, and then raising Jesus from the dead victoriously, and exalting Him to a place of authority, on the throne, at the right hand of the Father.
