Empowered in Community

And let us consider how to stir up one another to love and good works, not neglecting to meet together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another, and all the more as you see the Day drawing near.
Hebrews 10:24-25

CommunityAccording to the United Nations, the world’s population passed the 7 billion mark (7,000,000,000!) around October 31, 2011. It is strange that in a world with so many people, we idolize those who seemingly work, live, and act alone. From Amelia Earhart’s dogged attempts (if not successful) to fly around the world to Sir Edmund Hillary grueling ascent of Mt. Everest to popular heroes like the Lone Ranger, we seem to have a love affair with rugged individualist, the one-against-the-odds survivor.

Here at RCF, we don’t believe anyone is meant to be alone, to stand up to the harsh realities of life without friends, family, and a community of people round us. We need people who will pick us up when we fall, heal us when we are wounded and celebrate when we overcome – together.

Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their toil. For if they fall, one will lift up his fellow. But woe to him who is alone when he falls and has not another to lift him up! Again, if two lie together, they keep warm, but how can one keep warm alone? And though a man might prevail against one who is alone, two will withstand him—a threefold cord is not quickly broken.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-12

As we following Jesus’ footsteps, we recognize that we have a host of others around us walking in the same footsteps – other churches and congregations, other Christians and Christ-followers, and other people seeking truth, and grace, and love. By partnering with those who share the same mission given to us by our Lord.

Oh, and just to set the record straight, Amelia had her trusted co-pilot, Fred Noonan with her when she went down in the Pacific. Edmund reached the top of Everest side-by-side with his brave Sherpa guide, Tenzing Norgay. And even the Lone Ranger wasn’t all that lonely with Tonto by his side.
