Message Title: How to Walk in the Anointing
Date Presented: May 13, 2007
Delivered By: Lynn Kidd

The title of my message is: How to Walk in the Anointing.

Today I want to share with you HOW WE CAN WALK IN THE ANOINTING.

INTRO: How many people still listen to the News or read the Newspaper. Anyone tired of it? Every time you pick up the paper or listen to the News there is always something awful going on. — sickness, disease, killings, devastations. Here are just a few…..

1. The ending of 32 innocent lives by some demon-possessed mad man with a gun

2. Destruction of and entire town of 1500 people by a 205 mph tornado in Greensburg, KS

3. The arrest of six Islamic terrorists in Fort Dix, NJ hellbent on killing Americans.

  • Isn’t it time the church took a stand against the devil and his work?

  • Life can get pretty depressing if you have no hope or a way out but Jesus proclaims good news and that same life that Jesus preaches is available to us today to walk in His power to destroy the works of the enemy.

Turn with me to: Isaiah 61:1-4 NIV a very familiar passage:

The Spirit of the Sovereign LORD is on me,
because the LORD has anointed me
to preach good news to the poor.
He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted,
to proclaim freedom for the captives
and release from darkness for the prisoners,
to proclaim the year of the LORD’s favor
and the day of vengeance of our God,
to comfort all who mourn,
and provide for those who grieve in Zion —
to bestow on them a crown of beauty
instead of ashes,
the oil of gladness
instead of mourning,
and a garment of praise
instead of a spirit of despair.
They will be called oaks of righteousness,
a planting of the LORD
for the display of his splendor.

You Can Walk in the Anointing by:

I. DEFINE THE ANOINTING AND ITS PURPOSE:

This is what Nelsons Bible Dictionary has to say about the anointing: There are many scriptures I will just reference to and you can look them up later.

A. ANOINT or ANOINTING

  • To authorize, or set apart, a person for a particular work or service (Isa 61:1). The anointed person belonged to God in a special sense.

The phrases, “the Lord’s anointed,” “God’s anointed,” “My anointed,” “Your anointed,” or “His anointed” are used of Saul (1 Sam 26:9,11), David (2 Sam 22:51), and Solomon (2 Chron 6:42).

In the New Testament, all who are Christ’s disciples are said to be anointed; they are God’s very own, set apart and commissioned for service (2 Cor 1:21).

  • We know in the Old Testament Priests, kings, and prophets were anointed. Oil was poured on the head of the person being anointed (Ex 29:7). Kings were set apart through the ritual of anointing, which was performed by a prophet who acted in God’s power and authority (1 Sam 15:1). The Old Testament also records two instances of the anointing of a prophet (1 Kings 19:16; Isa 61:1).

In the passage in Isaiah 61, Jesus the Messiah is described as “anointed.”

  • In the New Testament we see that the anointing was frequently used in connection with healing. The disciples anointed the sick (Mark 6:13), and James instructed the elders of the church to anoint the sick with oil (James 5:14). This anointing was for the purpose of healing.

  • The anointing means, “to smear”. Not just a little dab will do you.

  • Anointing in the New Testament also refers to the anointing of the Holy Spirit, which brings understanding (1 John 2:20,27). This anointing is for kings, priests, and prophets; but the good news is the Bible says, God says that is what you are..

Luke 3:21-22

When all the people were being baptized, Jesus was baptized too. And as he was praying, heaven was opened and the Holy Spirit descended on him in bodily form like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my Son, whom I love; with you I am well pleased.”

B. The anointing is the equipping by the Holy Spirit to get the job done.

Just as Jesus was anointed for the continued work His Father had for Him we, too, have that same anointing available to us.

  1. Jesus started His earthly ministry only after he was baptized in the Holy Spirit.

    C. The anointing is not simply for personal enjoyment. It is always a mark of a mission, a commission or a sending assignment.

It’s great soaking in the presence of the Lord but if thats all we do we are missing what God called us to.

ILL. It was my last year of Bible School God was doing a tremendous work in the student body and the Spirit of the Lord was ever so present and God was setting people free. Even in my own life God was touching areas of my life. I was being renewed and refreshed but it didn’t end there. I could have stayed in that place because it was nice and comfortable but NO- there was much more that God had for me.

During that time God began to break my heart for the nations in even a greater way then before. He spoke to me about my assignment- Kenya, East Africa. I am glad I didn’t just stay in the soaking place but moved out into what He prepared me for.

  • As we continue to read on in the 4th chapter of Luke it says in verse 1. Jesus, full of the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led by the Spirit in the desert. We read on and it talks about Jesus being tempted by the devil. Jesus went through trials and testing. He went in with the power of the Holy Spirit and came out with the same power. He never lost it!

Then it continues on in vs 16 of Luke

Luke 4:16-22

He went to Nazareth, where he had been brought up, and on the Sabbath day he went into the synagogue, as was his custom. And he stood up to read. The scroll of the prophet Isaiah was handed to him. Unrolling it, he found the place where it is written:

“The Spirit of the Lord is on me, because he has anointed me to preach good news to the poor. He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the prisoners and recovery of sight for the blind,

to release the oppressed, to proclaim the year of the Lord’s favor.” Then he rolled up the scroll, gave it back to the attendant and sat down. The eyes of everyone in the synagogue were fastened on him, and he began by saying to them, “Today this scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”

D. The anointing empowers us to destroy the works of the devil.

Acts 1:8

But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

In this passage it does not say maybe you will receive power – it says YOU WILL RECEIVE POWER when the Holy Spirit comes upon you!!!! Then you will be commissioned

ILL. Just like you expect your vacuum to start working when you plug it in because you are connecting it to the power source the outlet which has current electricity going through it. The same way as we are connected to the Holy Spirit we are expecting and believing to get the power.

My kids have a children’s DVD, Little Einstein and in one part of the movie the kids are on a mission and they keep telling the kids say with us we need more power and they keep saying it. I thought about our own lives and how we need to be empowered to get the job done.

What will we be empowered to do? Isaiah 61:1-3/Luke 4

  1. Preach the Gospel

  2. Bind up the brokenhearted

  3. Proclaim freedom to the captives

  4. Release from darkness for the prisoners

  5. Comfort to those who mourn

  6. Proclaim the year of the Lord

We need the anointing to speak forth the word of God with boldness and walk in the miraculous!

ILL. Growing up I was very quiet and shy. I know you can’t imagine that but it is true. When I was 15 our youth pastor at the time wanted the group to go and witness at concerts and pass out tracks. How many people remember doing that. Well I was nervous and to be honest a bit fearful but as I began to step out and believe God was going to use me it He did and it was an awesome time. I want to encourage you youth get out of your comfort zone and go out street witnessing with Michael and Lisa Johnson.

As you are available to God and yielded to Him you will see mighty things happen– People saved and delivered!

APP. I encourage you if you are not baptized in the Holy Spirit that you would receive it today. That’s why the anointing is essential for our Christian life!!!

Believe and receive it. God has good things for you.

You Can Walk in the Anointing by:

I. DEFINE THE ANOINTING AND ITS PURPOSE

II. KNOW WHO THE ANOINTING IS FOR:

Did you ever ask your self that question who is it really for? I know the kings and priest had the anointing but this is just little old me. What can I do? The anointing is for all believers!

Let me read you a story from Our Daily Bread, April 2ii

ILL. During a Billy Sunday evangelistic campaign, a mentally impaired boy came faithfully each night to sing in the choir. “Joey was not very bright,” said Homer Rodeheaver, the well-known song leader for Billy Sunday, “but he never missed any of our meetings and wouldn’t leave until he shook my hand. Sometimes I was embarrassed by the way he constantly tailed me, and I secretly wished he’d go away.”

Then one evening a man came to Rodeheaver and said, “Thank you for being kind to my son Joey. He’s not right mentally, but never has he enjoyed anything so much as singing in the choir. He worked hard doing simple chores for people so he could contribute to the collection. Through his pleadings my wife and five other children came to this evangelistic campaign and have now received Christ. Last night his 75-year-old grandfather, who has been an atheist all his life, was saved, and tonight his grandmother also came forward. Now our entire family is converted!’” Joey was one of God’s faithful servants.

A. The anointing is for ALL MEN (women, children)!

Phil 2:5-8

Your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus: Who, being in very nature God,

did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing,

taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness. And being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death — even death on a cross!

John 5:19

Jesus gave them this answer: “I tell you the truth, the Son can do nothing by himself; he can do only what he sees his Father doing, because whatever the Father does the Son also does.

I would like to read something from When Heaven Invades Earth by Bill Johnson.

Pg 29

Jesus could not heal the sick. Neither could He deliver the tormented from demons or raise the dead. To believe otherwise is to ignore what He said about Himself, and more importantly, to miss the purpose of His self-imposed restriction to live as a man.

Jesus Christ said of Himself, ‘The Son can do nothing.: In the Greek language that word nothing has a unique meaning– It means NOTHING, just like it does in English! He had NO supernatural capabilities whatsoever! While He is 100 percent God, He chose to live with the same limitations that man would face once He was redeemed. He made that point over and over again. Jesus became the model for all who would embrace the invitation to invade the impossible in His name. He performed miracles, wonders, and signs, as a man in right relationship to God…not as God. If He performed miracles because He was God, then they would be unattainable for us. But if He did them as a man, I am responsible to pursue His lifestyle. Recapturing this simple truth changes everything…and makes possible a full restoration of the ministry of Jesus in His Church.

CHURCH WHATEVER WAS AVAILABLE TO HIM THEN IS AVAILABLE TO US NOW!!

So the anointing is available to us.

  • The difference between Jesus and us is that He had no sin to separate Him from the Father.

He was totally dependent on the power of the Holy Spirit working through Him.

We are sinners cleansed by the blood of Jesus. Because of what Jesus did on the cross nothing separates us from the Father.

If Jesus was dependent on the Holy Spirit how much more do we need to be dependent on the Holy Spirit.

  • We have to stop walking around like we are defeated. Jesus did everything for you on the cross. So rise up church and take your place!

  • Lets be a people who are no longer satisfied to live a “subnormal life.” Let us be a people who desire and live in the supernatural. Because the supernatural is the normal life.

  • The supernatural is not some far out weird thing. It is being empowered by the Holy Spirit to do what the Lord has said in His word to do. Is 61 This is apart of your everyday life. “As you are going” - work, school, supermarket, play groups, walking, meetings etc

Quote from “The Anointing of His Holy Spirit” by Smith Wigglesworth:

If you will allow the Holy Ghost to have full control, you will find you are living in the Spirit. You will discover that your opportunities will be God’s opportunities. And you will find that you have come to the right place at the right time. Then the Holy Spirit will give you the exact words to speak, anointed words that will meet the need of the moment.

APP. I want to encourage you today that you would take hold of the word of God. That you would be God’s anointed ministers today set on fire for God. That our faith would be activated!!! Let’s believe that His great might and power will burn in us until our whole lives are energized by His power.

You Can Walk in the Anointing by:

I. DEFINE THE ANOINTING AND ITS PURPOSE

II. KNOW WHO THE ANOINTING IS FOR

III. KNOW HIS PLAN FOR THE ANOINTING:

A. That He would be revealed and man might respond to Him.

It’s not about you….It’s about Jesus!!!

The Spirit of God is in you and wants out of you so he can flow through you to change the world around you.

ILL. I wanted to share a story about Diane Frigon. She gave me permission. Diane was a little bit nervous about starting her own cell group but we just kept encouraging her that she would do great. It got her out of her comfort zone.. “I have to ask my neighbors”???? Now Diane has good relationships with her neighbors. How could anyone not like Auntie Diane! But Diane knew what it was all about. That Jesus might be revealed in her neighbors. So Diane started asking her neighbors. Some said I’ll think about it and others said thanks but no thanks I am not religious. (2 stories here)

One of her neighbors started coming to cell group. That was encouraging but soon it seemed like something always came up and they couldn’t make it. So discouragement came in but she began to give it over to God. It is by your Spirit that you draw men. Then they finally made a meeting and a question was asked about have you felt the Lord drawing you to himself. This person said well, “ over the past months I have had a neighbor sharing with me and inviting me to a cell group and I have sensed God drawing me to himself like never before”! What a testimony- It goes on-

Another neighbor dropped by Diane’s to give her food for the food bank. They started talking and Diane asked this person was doing. Well, not so good. They were having problems with their vision. This person already told Diane that they were not religious. The Holy Spirit prompted Diane to say, well, can I pray for you…. and they said yes! Now Diane could have said to God, well you know he is not religious and I just can’t do that. Instead Diane full of the Holy Ghost stepped out in faith and asked the question.

  • See Church it’s all about Jesus being revealed and working in peoples lives. One person can change the course of the world! Do you believe it.

Joel 2:28-3:1

‘And afterward, I will pour out my Spirit on all people. Your sons and daughters will prophesy, your old men will dream dreams, your young men will see visions. Even on my servants, both men and women, I will pour out my Spirit in those days. I will show wonders in the heavens and on the earth, blood and fire and billows of smoke. The sun will be turned to darkness and the moon to blood before the coming of the great and dreadful day of the LORD. And everyone who calls on the name of the LORD will be saved; for on Mount Zion and in Jerusalem there will be deliverance, as the LORD has said, among the survivors whom the LORD calls.

Salvation Message:

  • It is God’s desire that all men might come to know Him.

So today do know Jesus? If not, I want to tell you again what He did and can do for you!

  • Jesus came to the earth, died, rose again so that you can be in right relationship with God.

  • Jesus came that you might have eternal life.

  • Jesus came to set your free from bondage of the life you live.

  • Jesus came because He loves YOU!

Your response to God is that you:

  • Recognize that you are distant from God.

  • That you have sinned.

  • God still loves you and died for you.

  • Eternal life is a gift from God.

  • You can be saved from death.

  • It is your decision to choose God!

God’s promise For everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.
