I was greatly encouraged this past Saturday by God’s faithfulness to respond to intercession by His kids. This past Saturday (Nov 25th, 2006), in Augusta, Maine, there was a Holistic Mystic Fair event held in the Holiday Inn conference rooms. Various “vendors” purchased tables from Enchanted Dragon business owner, Mary Alderman, to display their wares and entice the Kennebec Valley to consult mediums, spiritists, alternative healers, sorcerers, witches and the like.

Mike Hein, of the Christian Civic League, notified me about this Fair the previous Saturday after reading the interview that the Augusta newspaper, the Kennebec Journal, had with Mary Alderman to promote the event. After asking the Lord for direction, the Holy Spirit put it on my heart to invite pastors and local churches in Kennebec Valley to respond to this gathering with intercessory prayer, and to welcome anyone willing to go on the Holiday Inn complex and pray onsite with insight, in addition, to deliver the Word of God to “seekers.”

I reserved the Executive Room at the Holiday Inn complex for the Saturday that the event would be held and several people joined in praying in the room, as well as praying in the parking lot and giving “goodies” away!

Thankfully, the Mystic Fair vendors complained throughout the day that the turnout was absolutely horrible, many of them left their tables for long lunches with no clients to tend to, and all of them folded up their tables before the official 5pm closing.

Why is it so important for followers of Jesus Christ to confront darkness like this when it attempts to set up camp in our backyard?

Good question!!! I’m glad you asked!!!

First, and foremost, we need to have the view that God has on this issue of mediums, spiritists and the like. We need to grasp how He sees this issue. The only way to do that is to search His Word and hear what He has to say about it…What does God have to say about this?

Lev 19:31 ‘Do not turn to mediums or spiritists; do not seek them out to be defiled by them. I am the LORD your God.” NASU

Lev 20:6-7 6 ‘As for the person who turns to mediums and to spiritists, to play the harlot after them, I will also set My face against that person and will cut him off from among his people. 7 ‘You shall consecrate yourselves therefore and be holy, for I am the LORD your God.’ NASU

Deut 18:10-12 10 “There shall not be found among you anyone who makes his son or his daughter pass through the fire, one who uses divination, one who practices witchcraft, or one who interprets omens, or a sorcerer, 11 or one who casts a spell, or a medium, or a spiritist, or one who calls up the dead. 12 “For whoever does these things is detestable to the LORD; and because of these detestable things the LORD your God will drive them out before you.” NASU

Isa 8:19 When they say to you, “Consult the mediums and the spiritists who whisper and mutter,” should not a people consult their God? Should they consult the dead on behalf of the living? NASU

1 Tim 2:5-6 5 For there is one God, and one mediator also between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, 6 who gave Himself as a ransom for all, NASU

John 10:14-16 14 “I am the good shepherd, and I know My own and My own know Me, 15 even as the Father knows Me and I know the Father; and I lay down My life for the sheep. 16 “I have other sheep, which are not of this fold; I must bring them also, and they will hear My voice; and they will become one flock with one shepherd.” NASU

John 10:26-27 26 “But you do not believe because you are not of My sheep. 27 “My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me;” NASU

John 18:37 …Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice. NASU

From these passages we see God’s birdseye view of this issue. The minute we attempt to explain away these passages with “neat-sounding” cliches or anything contrary to His Word, we make ourselves out to be gods. God clearly reveals that He takes consulting mediums, spiritists, psychics, alternative healers, tarot card readers and the like as a reproach to His name. A reproach because men and women that consult these people boldly declare to the Lord and all creation that God is insufficiently wise or compassionate enough to make a way for counsel for His creation. Why would we consult mediums and spiritists who fellowship with fallen angels? Why wouldn’t we want to consult with the One who CREATED the angels, before they rebelled and were cast down? Why not consult the One who created all things, seen and unseen, who knows the end from the beginning, whose plans for your life were laid out from the foundation of the earth? God promises us in these passages that we can consult Him and we will hear His voice. And the wonderful thing about it is that He paid the price for us with His blood, shed on the Cross, so that we could hear His voice. Amazing how God pays the price for our consultation with Him! I don’t think you’ll get that generous of a deal from mediums, psychics, or spiritists!
